Young and old alike, whether male or female, are fond of this type of dance. However, those who love to salsa need a good pair of
salsa dance shoes to be in best form for dancing. Since these shoes are made especially for this type of dance, serious salsa dancers need salsa shoes to last them during marathon dance sessions.

Discounted pairs of salsa shoes are perfect for beginners of this type of dance. Kids in particular who grow up so fast need a cheap yet good pair of these shoes. For a beginner class, though, special types of dance wear and salsa shoes are not really prerequisites. Students who are starting to learn how to dance can wear just about any comfortable clothes and leather-soled foot wear. For advanced salsa classes that require more spinning, salsa shoes with special soles meant for spinning are a must. Those with thin leather or suede shoes are especially required.

These types of shoes have a great fit unlike other shoes. Worn slightly tighter than regular street shoes, they should have a snug fit but should not pinch nor bind the dancer’s feet. Salsa dancers need to be able to move with ease without hurting the foot. The feet should be in contact with all parts of the shoe. If the foot constantly slips out of the shoes, the dancer cannot maintain her poise and grace. These stores have wide selections of handcrafted ballroom and even Latin dance shoes from overseas shoe capitals. You rarely see a ballroom dancer doing the waltz in tennis shoes. It's not common to see ballerinas in flip flops. Have you ever seen a tap dancer in hiking boots? I didn't think so...

What most dancers forget is there are various types of dancing shoes. Some dances even have different types of dance shoes. For example, clogging uses a jazz oxford shoe with a leather upper. Steel taps are installed on the toe and heels of the shoe. If you used nails to install the taps, you must make sure the nails are long enough to keep the taps stable, but not too long - they can go right up in to the shoe itself. Women also use a jazz oxford or a mary jane style shoe. Each has pros and cons. Try the different stlyes and decide what works for you before purchasing something that's not comfortable.

Folk dance shoes are also difficult to choose. Irish Hard Shoes are awesome; but if you've never used a good pair before, you may be deceived. So, as you can see, choosing the right dance shoes is tough. Sneakers, sandals, flip flops, or shoes with rubber soles, won't work. Proper dance shoes must be comfortable on your feet. Focus on dancing! If your feet are sore, the focus will definitely be shifted.

Buying the right dance shoe must be looked at as an important investment. Shop around. Compare prices. Check out different styles and selection. An important reminder: don’t wear dance shoes outside. You must always put them in a dance bag or carrying case traveling. Taking good care of the leather material will also extend the wear of the dance shoes and make your investment more worthwhile.

Dance shoes have a large impact on the way you perform. Practice in the shoes, break them in. This way you won't be uncomfortable we you go out to perform or compete. With this information, you are now ready to hit the floor and dance the night away!

Is dancing a legal way to meet your spouse?

Has dancing ever helped you meet someone new? Does the law permit two people to use their dancing shoes as a way to meet one another? The article below is a perfect example of how dancing definitely is a very legal and lawful way to meet your spouse:

"I'd like to find a partner who dances. Do you?" my profile on Match.com asked. My now-husband Drew emailed that he was willing to take lessons, and that was enough for me. Non-dancer Drew’s courage to put himself out on the dance floor and to show in lesson after lesson his amateur status was truly impressive. We took private dance instruction for a year before our wedding, and as a result, got around the dance floor quite gracefully at our reception.

Women are dying to dance. Any man who can ask a woman to dance, then take charge of what happens on the floor and move relatively smoothly to music, has enormous appeal. Fat or skinny, short, tall, or not even close to attractive, even old, old, old, a man who is comfortable on the dance floor has his pick of the ladies.

For whatever the reason, dancing intoxicates. Especially women.

Few men can really dance, and those guys are on the floor constantly. Some men think they can dance and do get up, ask the ladies, and have fun. But at least half the men sit or stand uncomfortably on the sidelines with all the women who wish to be on the dance floor.

We women don't get to dance nearly as much as we'd like to, even the ladies who are good dancers. There aren't enough dancing men to go around. You can almost feel the yearning, the sadness, and the disappointment in those women and between those non-dancing couples. And the non-dancing guys? Pathetic.

I personally know three women close to my age who met their now - spouses on the dance floor, and those ladies were great catches! Gentlemen and ladies, there's a message here.

Guys:

1. Take lessons and learn how to dance. Leading well takes skill, but if Drew could learn how, so can you.

2. Go to dances.

3. Ask women to dance. Lots of women. They'll love it. Even if you aren't so good, they'll appreciate your efforts.

Dance lessons themselves are good places to meet women, and most dance studios have regular parties for their students to practice what they have learned.

Ladies:

1. Take dancing lessons yourself and learn how to follow. Here I was, 50 years old, thinking I loved to dance, and I had no idea how to do the woman's part! Following takes skill! You have to figure out what your partner has in mind for you to do in a split second, and then actually do it, all while dancing backwards.

2. Buy yourself some real ballroom dancing shoes, maybe with high heels. Believe it or not, those shoes are comfortable. They have to be. Not only do they look very sexy, they stay on your feet!

3. Hang out at dances, too, if you like to dance. Single guys go to dances.
If you are connected to a dance studio, other single women will be at their parties as well as the studio instructors and male students, so you will know people. Dance parties are safe and comfortable for single women.

Guys -- nothing enhances as man's romantic marketability more than becoming a decent dancer. Learning to dance is cost efficient and relatively painless. No surgery or blood loss, no sweaty hours at the gym, no personality makeovers needed. Just dance lessons.

What's stopping you? Look up the dance studio nearest you and make that call! You'll become a dancing babe magnet!
Put on your dancing shoes and get on the floor!

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kathryn_Lord

Daughter's Ballet Shoes

I was really glad when my daughter told me during her fifth birthday, that she wants to be a ballerina when she grows up. It thrilled me to know that I had a true little girl who is not interested in being a tomboy. I enrolled her into some creative dance classes before going into ballet. I was overjoyed when her instructors told me after the first year, that they thought she would be perfect for beginner ballet lessons.

My daughter and I were so excited that we rushed out to buy the outfits that she would need for her ballet classes. My daughter looked so beautiful in her tights that I was literally I was taking pictures of her every few seconds. Then we began to look for ballet shoes. The salesperson was very helpful, but my daughter didn't like the way that the shoes felt on her feet. I tried to explain to her that ballet shoes were supposed to feel that way. I also told her that she has to wear them if she wanted to take ballet classes. My daughter pouted for a few moments and then finally agreed.

She attended her first ballet class after a week. My little girl was all decked out elegantly in her new outfit, but refused to put the ballet shoes on. I had to plead with her for about 15 minutes before I was able to convince her that she could wear sandals and put her shoes on when we arrived. She packed them in her bag, but then she told me that she would be dancing in her sandals. I just sighed and hoped that her teacher can do a better job of convincing her to wear the ballet shoes.

All of the other girls in her class were running around happily in their outfits when we arrived. My daughter removed her sandals but was content to walk around barefoot. I whispered the issue to her ballet teacher, who agreed to deal with it. She approached my daughter and whispered something in her ear. Before I knew it, the ballet shoes were on my daughter’s feet. I was amazed and pleased when I left the room.

My daughter is now in high school and has gone through several pairs of ballet shoes. She is still determined to chase her dream of being a ballerina in the future. I feel very proud and happy whenever I see her carrying those pink ballet shoes to class. Many of my paychecks have been spent on buying her ballet outfits and shoes. But I can tell you that I have never once complained about a single dollar I spent. I still even have that first pair of tiny shoes for ballet that we purchased. They are now sitting on my dresser, next to a picture of my daughter in her first ballet recital.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Morgan_Hamilton

What should I look for in a quality dance shoe?

This is a question many dancers have: "What makes one shoe different than another?" Another common question may be "Why is this dance shoe so much more expensive than the rest, even though they all look the same?"

Before learning any dance form, quality and affordable dance shoes are a must.

Through research, we've found a few things that qualify a dance shoe as satisfactory. One of the first things to look for in most dance shoes are non slip soles with a metal or wooden type shank on the arch of the foot for added support. Shoes must be fairly light weight and flexible but yet able to hold up in dance classes.

Is price always an issue when it comes to quality? Not necessarily. Discounted or affordable dance shoes or even used shoes can still be a good idea, especially for someone who is just starting a form of dance. Before you rush in to making a big purchase of a dance shoe, make a judgement on how involved you plan to be.

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself:

1) Are you going to be competing?

2) Are the shoes for casual dancing?

3) Are the shoes just for a beginning class?

These are important questions to ask yourself before you make a hasty decision. A discounted dance shoe does not always mean that the quality is bad. However, as the cliche goes, you often "get what you pay for."

These are just a few thoughts, what do you all think?

What components are required for a durable, long lasting clogging shoe?

I've been doing research on this and can't seem to find the best answers so I thought I'd propose the question to dancers who know and who use a variety of dance shoes. My question is simple:

What components are required for a durable, long lasting clogging shoes?

Some have told me the leather upper. Others have said an even seem. My questions are what type of leather is the best to use? Are certain clogging shoes better for toe stands? What about the clogging taps - do they make a difference on the durability of the shoe? I've seen the Steven's Stomper Buck Tap with the steel flange on the toe and have heard and seen from my own experience that the steel flange adds more sound and protects the toe of the shoe. But does that same steel flange limit balance and flexibility with certain advanced clogging steps?

If fellow cloggers, tap dancers, or other dance enthusiasts have comments or feedback, please let all of us know....thanks!

What do dancers think of the new movie "Step Up"?

I just returned from the new movie "Step Up" and wondered what other dancers thought about the presentation. What other dance apparel or dance shoe companies were involved?

Where did Tyler, the male lead, come from? Was he a street dancer turned actor? They are often made of black patent leather, although some current incarnations are also made of canvas or suede.
Traditionally Mary Janes are a variety of shoes worn mainly by girls. In modern times they are worn by women of all ages. However, while Mary Janes may be considered formal for girls, they are informal when worn by women.

Are Mary Jane style shoes good for dancing?

Your dance shoes will directly affect your dancing. In general, any shoe with a smooth leather sole that allows for easy turning and spinning is the best. Once you’ve found a sole that works well for you, look for a comfortable shoe that fits well and doesn’t slip and slide around on your foot. This often means choosing straps or laces to keep the shoe secure when you’re dancing. That's where the Mary Jane style comes in - it allows for breathing yet keeps your shoe snug to the foot.

While a strapped or closed shoe may not always be your first choice in style, it can make a big difference when you’re dancing. Some women really like dancing in pumps; others find that a shoe that’s not strapped onto their foot will fall off too easily, especially when trying to keep up with slick dance maneuvers. It’s painful to constantly scrunch up your toes to keep your shoes on, and it’s bad for your feet. When you can trust your footwear to be there for you, you can focus your attention on great style and technique, instead of working so hard to keep those stylish but flimsy shoes from flying across the dance floor!

What are the best clogging shoes? + clog dancing terminology...

I found this on a dancing forum and thought it was interesting...

My question is: What are the best clogging shoes out there?

TRADITIONAL CLOGGING TERMINOLOGY
All traditional clogging steps are made up of some combination of the following basic movements. The movements themselves fall into two groups -Toe Movements and Heel Movements. Each Toe Movement occurs on an upbeat of the music and is followed by a Heel Movement which occurs on the downbeat of the music. There are no silent or syncopated beats in Traditional Clogging. The rhythm of the dance is kept by the heel. Anytime the heel is sounded, the knee is flexed and then straightened on the following upbeat, resulting in the characteristic up and down motion of the dancer's body.

The word "click" is used in the descriptions below to indicate that a tap has contacted the floor. All clicks should have a sharp, clear sound, not scuffed or muffled.

HEEL MOVEMENTS These fall on the downbeat (or bass beat) of the music

HEEL
The weight of the body is already on the ball of the foot when the HEEL movement is done. Snap the heel down, producing a sharp click, and flex the knee downward, distributing the body weight along the entire length of the foot.

STEP
Place the entire foot flat on the floor, producing a click with the toe tap and the heel tap at the same time and transferring the body weight along the full length of the foot while flexing the knee downward.

SLIDE
A down and forward counterpart of the up and back motion of the DRAG (see TOE MOVEMENTS). With the foot flat on the floor and the knee straight, roll your weight up onto the ball of the foot, letting your knee begin to go slack. As the weight of your body begins to drop forward and down, let the instinctive tightening of your thigh muscles save you from a fall by sliding your foot forward (bout the length of your foot) and then letting your heel snap down, producing the click and redistributing your weight along the whole length of your foot. At the end of the SLIDE the knee will be in a flexed position. (Also can be done with both feet on the floor in the same manner.)

TOE MOVEMENTS These fall on the upbeat of the music

TOE
The ball of the foot produces a click while the heel remains out of contact with the floor. TOE implies that the body weight has been transferred to the ball of the foot. The knee should be basically straight.

DOUBLE TOE
Two clicks are produced in the space of on upbeat of music. The ball of the foot strikes the floor during the forward motion of a short kick and the knee straightens (ankle is relaxed and foot angles downward). The knee bends upward immediately and the same foot swings backward with the ball of the foot striking the floor again in the same spot. The heel should not touch the floor. The two motions of the foot are considered to be one movement with no hesitation between them. Normally, the clicks occur slightly in front of the body, but they may be done in other directions as well.

ROCK
A click is produced by transferring the weight onto the ball of the foot slightly behind the body's center of gravity. The knee is in a flexed position at first, causing the body's weight to "rock" back slightly as the center of gravity changes. The opposite foot is always lifted off the floor during a ROCK. The heel of the foot doing the ROCK does not touch the floor, but the knee does straighten.

BRUSH
The foot is allowed to swing from the knee with a pendulum action. The ball of the foot produces a click by striking the floor and continuing in the direction of the swing (which may be to the front, to the rear, or crossing in front or in back of the opposite leg). Movement comes from the hip and the knee joint, and the knee of the BRUSHing foot always bends upward following the click (at the same time as the following heel movement).

DRAG
The foot is flat on the floor and the knee is flexed when the DRAG begins. With a springing motion which moves the weight of the body up and back, straighten the knee allowing momentum to lift you heel slightly off the floor and drag your foot back about half the length of the foot. The weight is distributed along the length of the foot at the end of the movement and there is no distinctive click. (This can also be done with both feet on the floor in the same manner )

NOTE: Much of what is considered to be "traditional" clog dance styling depends on the part of Appalachia the definitions come from, but the following points are frequently raised:

Smooth flowing motions with a constant DRAG-SLIDE incorporated into the footwork- no head bobbing, no arm waving, no jumpy or jerky body actions.

Feet no more than 6 to 8 inches off the floor- no one but the floor should see the bottom of your clogging shoes. No silent or syncopated beats -toe movements are executed on upbeats and heel movements on downbeats.

CONTEMPORARY CLOGGING TERMINOLOGY

Since clogging is a living folk dance, part of what the dance is will be defined by what folks are dancing at any given time. Accordingly, new movements and new ways of using traditional movements are constantly being developed. As well, liberties are being taken with the "rule" of toe movements on upbeats and heel movements on downbeats. At the same time, however, try to remain aware that there is a distinction between what is traditional and what is contemporary so that you can keep your students informed (as well as happy!).

With the above points in mind, the following are the Contemporary Clogging Movements you'll se around the clogging floor these days:

HOP
An extension of SLIDE used in describing any upward motion that causes both feet to lose contact with the floor. The hop occurs with the upward motion taking place on the upbeat of the music and the click produced on the bass beat when the foot comes back into contact with the floor. The knee is flexed downward as you land. Landing after the hop may take place on the same foot that did the push off into the air, or the HOP may be used to change the weight to the opposite foot depending on the demands of the step being done. A foot designator L or R beneath the word HOP on a cuesheet would indicate the foot change.

SLUR
Feet will be slightly apart when a SLUR begins. On the upbeat, draw the toe tap along the floor (giving a slurred tap sound) toward the weight-bearing foot (usually ending across in back). Drop the heel to the floor producing a click on the bass beat. Originally SLUR was separated from the following beat, but today most choreographers assume that you will automatically include the heel sound when using the term SLUR.

CLICK
Describes a motion where the sides of your clogging shoes are touches together. As with slur, most choreographers assume that you will click your heels together on an upbeat and then sound a heel tap on the following bass beat. Several varieties of CLICK exist today and are further defined by the styling terms provided with the step.

KICK
A variation of the BRUSH that simply omits the sound of the toe tap by eliminating any contact with the floor. Leg motion and action is the same as the BRUSH.

STOMP
A strongly accented flatfoot step taking the full weight of the foot.

TOUCH
A term used to imply the same sound and motion as that of a TOE, but the foot ins immediately picked up again without transferring the body weight to that foot.

STAMP
A flatfooted TOUCH

BREAK
The entire side of the foot has been turned sideways and away from the other foot to become flush with the floor. Weight is borne by the other foot.

PIVOT
Describes a motion on the ball of the foot in a given direction. Usually occurs on the upbeat and does not necessarily include dropping the heel on the following bass beat. Therefore, the next intended movement should be written out as well.

PULL
Indicated that the dancer will "scrape" the tip of the clogging shoe along the floor usually toward the other foot. Can be done from the rear, from across in back, from across in front, etc.

BUCK DANCE TERMINOLOGY
Buck Dancing has come to be recognized in clogging circles as a specific style of dancing that differs from flat-footing in that a buck dancer keeps his weight on the balls of the feet and produces clicks by the interchanging of heel and toe movements to make what has been described as a "patter" sound. In the mountains of West Virginia, where I come from, the term "buck dancing" is used to describe any solo freestyle dancing -whether it be traditional clogging, flat-foot or otherwise. By the same token, dancing with a partner is known as a "buck and wing" dance. .

The terms outlined below are used to described movements used in the heel -toe dance style commonly known as "buck dancing":

BALL
The transfer of the body weight in a stepping motion to the ball of the foot with the knee bent slightly.

BOUNCE
The same as BALL, but with a hopping motion instead of a stepping motion. You may BOUNCE on the same foot or use it to change from one foot to another.

DIG
A step (transfer of body weight) onto the hack edge of the heel.

FLANGE
A term used to indicate that the dancer has completely turned the foot over and outward to bring the area of the shoe which covers the last two toes flush with the floor. The heel is aimed upward and weight is borne by the other foot

FLICK
A short back BRUSH of the toe tap (usually following a heel sound from the same foot)

HIT
A touch of the back edge of the heel tap to the floor without any transfer of weight to the floor

POINT
A touch of the tip of the shoe (NOT the ball of the foot) to the floor behind the body (or across in front or in back of the opposite foot, etc.)

SKUFF
A short forward brush with the heel tap striking the floor. Normally, the front portion of the heel tap is the area which produces the click.

SKUFFLE
A short forward and back brush which produces two sounds from the heel tap in one beat of music (&a).

SLIP
A forward chug on the ball of the foot only -no heel tap sound is produced.

SNAP From a foot flat on the floor (normally done as a part of the DRAG on the same foot), the toe of the foot is raised slightly and then immediately dropped again to produce a sound of the toe tap.

Bloch vs. Capezio

I've looked at jazz shoes, the bloch brand and the capezio, and am not sure which is the better quality. What is the advantage of the split-sole? Does anyone have feedback about these two brands of jazz shoes? I found this information:

The Bloch Enduro Tech Shoe - Is this good for tap dancing too? Can you install taps easily. This is information I found:

This shoe uses the Bloch exclusive high arch mould and features a suede leather reinforcement that is stitched on to high stress areas. It provides much-extended wear. The upper also contains a mesh arch for perfect fit and foot aeration as well as a high tech comfortable, moisture removing lining. The insole has been air punched and works in conjunction with the mesh arch to achieve the aeration. The new two stage moulded heel gives comfort and cushioning but retains perfect foot to floor contact. The upper has a specially shaped top line to remove stress from Achilles Tendon when pointing.Construction: LeatherSplit sole lace up shoe.

I also found this information about the Capezio Glide Jazz Shoe:

This PowerPointe construction jazz shoe uses an all Mesisto Leather with Lycra upper for a sleek, snug fit. A suede footbed for a better grip and moisture absorption. Stretch gore makes the instep "breathe". The cushioned suede sole patch adds style and functionality. An injected PVC heel improves shock absorption and grip. The low topline creates an attractive profile.

Any thoughts on which is best?
